Jeff City Reconsiders Gambling

Riverboat gambling companies will be watching Jefferson City on Tuesday when voters there decide whether to repeal their approval of a gambling boat. Jeremy Brown has the story from Jefferson City.

Three years ago Jefferson City voters approved riverboat gambling.

But since then, they've rejected statewide proposals to expand riverboat gambling.

And just a few months back, the city elected an anti-gambling mayor who made gambling a key issue in the campaign.

The new mayor is Duane Schreimann (SHRY-man).

He expresses no doubt that a city rejection of gambling simply tosses this issue to the courts:

A Jefferson City court fight would have statewide implications. For if the city were allowed to toss out its gambling boat -- it would mean that no casino anywhere in the state would be safe from shifting public attitudes about gambling.

From the state capitol, I'm Jeremy Brown.
