Classroom Violence Could Lead To Prison

December 04, 1995

A child who assaults a teacher could end up in jail for years under a safe-schools legislative package unveiled today, Monday, by Missouri's governor. Phill Brooks has the story from Jefferson City:

Under the governor's package, assault against a school employee would be made a felony crime.

Carnahan conceded that would include simply throwing a chalk-board eraser at teacher or just a verbal assault.

But the governor said prosecutors would retain power to decide whether to actually file felony charges.

In addition to tougher criminal sanctions, the governor's package also includes crime-prevention provisions such as state funding for anti-gang programs in the classroom.
